Latin Name: Boswellia serrata Roxb. Pennell
A middle-sized tree with alternate deciduous sessile leaves. It is found in the forests of western and central India. Gum resin from the stem is used medicinally.
Application
Ayurveda has used Shallaki extensively in the treatment of painful joint diseases and other inflammatory conditions. Its anti inflammatory activity has been studied in different dimensions. These studies observed Shallaki to be a potent anti-inflammatory agent working through varied mechanisms of action. Its resin has been identified to exert multidimensional anti-inflammatory effects. Through a battery of evidence Shallaki preparation are recommended to ensure free mobility of joints.
Chemical composition
It contains gum, resin and aromatic oil. Main constituent of the gum are boswellic acids, which are reported to have anti arthritic properties.
Effect on dosha
Balances kapha and pitta.
